The Almost Shark Attack

This post is written by Tina- Sara's incredibly magnificent sister and very best friend.

This morning we went to the beautiful Fort Lauderdale beach again. We got in our tubes and went a little ways out to float the waves. The waves were very calm but there was a storm in the distance and clouds were coming in. Since it was cloudy, the water was just a little darker- not quite as bright and clear as normal. It was making me a little more scared than normal because it was a little darker, so I was holding on to Sara’s tube. We were floating out by ourselves and relaxing in our tubes when we heard a splash behind us. I turned to see what it was and there was a huge dark shadow in the water. Sure that we were about to die, and so scared I could hardly talk, I whispered to Sara, “Sara there is something behind us!” I wasn’t sure whether to move or stay still, but as soon as Sara saw the shadow she started frantically flapping her arms to get back to shore. So then I started rowing back to shore and was going at least twice as fast as Sara. In my mind I could picture the mysterious dark thing in the water chasing me, but at the same time I thought for sure it was going to attack Sara at any second because she was so far behind and going so slow!!! Eventually she got out of her tube to swim back since she was moving so slow in her tube. When we got back to shore I was shaking and so scared. I told Sara to go tell the life-guard but to not be dramatic about it. When Sara calmly told the lifeguard about it he said that when the waters are calm the wildlife likes to come in shore more- especially a fish called tarpon (averaging in length about 4-8 feet, up to 300 pounds). He said sharks come in shore more at this time too because they like to eat tarpon. He said that if it was big and we heard a splash there was a big possibility it was a tarpon because sharks tend to stay towards the bottom of the water (creepy!!!). However, he said there is a possibility it could have been a shark, so to stay closer to the shore.

We could have been eaten by a shark today.
